House Rewiring in Stroud and Gloucestershire

Stroud Electrical Services undertakes both home rewiring and commercial projects, meeting current BS 7671 wiring regulations, completed to the latest safety standards. We ensure that your electrical systems are modern, efficient and secure, with our team of NICEIC electricians who have years of local experience in electrical rewiring in Stroud, Gloucester, Cheltenham and the surrounding areas.

We have been doing this since 2009, and there are nine qualified electricians on the team. That matters more than it sounds on a job this size. Rewires get held up by illness, by a wall that turns out to be solid, by a house that needs more circuits than anyone expected. A bigger team absorbs that. And the certificate you get at the end is only worth something if the people who issued it are still trading when your solicitor asks for it.

When to Consider Rewiring

Whilst it might not be top of your priority list, rewiring is often needed when a property’s electrical system no longer meets modern safety standards or can no longer keep up with usage demands. Usual signs include outdated or damaged wiring, flickering lights, frequent tripping, or sockets that feel warm. If you have older consumer units, commonly installed pre 2000, then electrical upgrades need to be carried out to improve safety and capacity.

Some of these are decisive on their own. Others only matter alongside something else. If you recognise two or three, it is worth having someone look:

  • Round-pin sockets, or sockets with no earth pin
  • Bakelite switches, or a wooden-backed fuse box with rewireable fuses
  • Rubber, fabric or lead-sheathed cable visible in the loft or under floorboards. Rubber insulation goes brittle and cracks, usually somewhere you cannot see it
  • A consumer unit with no RCD protection
  • Scorch marks or discolouration around sockets or switches
  • Circuits that trip repeatedly with no obvious cause
  • A slight tingle from metal light switches, taps or appliance casings
  • An EICR that has come back unsatisfactory with multiple C2 codes across different circuits

Age alone is not a reason. Wiring installed in the 1980s and properly maintained can still be perfectly safe. Wiring from the 1960s almost certainly is not.

Rewiring is also strongly recommended during renovations, extensions or after a change in ownership, so that you’re safe in the knowledge it’s compliant and will deliver long-term reliability. Home rewiring is designed to protect people, appliances and the building itself. So whether you manage a rental property or live in your own home, if you’re unsure, our team can assess your existing system and recommend the safest, most cost-effective approach for complete satisfaction.

Our Rewiring Process

Stroud Electrical Services are there to make electrical rewiring in Stroud and across Gloucestershire straightforward and stress-free. We follow a clear and professional process that starts with an initial inspection and a transparent quotation that is based on a full electrical condition assessment. During this time, we’ll be able to identify any risks and plan what upgrades are needed accurately.

Following the assessment, our highly competent team with an eye for detail will design the system layout, including sockets, lighting and safety components, before starting the works. During the installation stage, we will replace old wiring, fit new accessories and upgrade consumer units where required. Under NICEIC guidelines and standards, all work is fully tested and certified once complete, and we always ensure to keep disruption to a minimum whilst maintaining a clean and organised site. We work efficiently to reduce downtime, keeping homes and businesses operational throughout.

What it is like to live through

A rewire is generally messy. Cables running inside walls, so walls get chased. Floorboards come up. There is dust, and there is noise, and for parts of the day there will be circuits without power.

What we do about it:

  • We work room by room rather than stripping the whole house at once, and keep at least one working circuit live wherever the installation allows it
  • Floors and furniture are covered before anything starts
  • We tell you at the start of each day which rooms are affected and roughly when the power goes off
  • Waste goes with us. Chases are filled ready for plastering

You do not usually have to move out of an occupied house, though some people prefer to for the noisiest few days.

How we price a rewire

We price each rewire after seeing the property, and we put it in writing. Nothing on a website can tell you what your house will cost, because the number depends on how many circuits you actually have, what the walls are made of, whether the floors lift easily and whether anyone is living there while the work happens.

What we will commit to before we visit is scope. When we quote, the quote says exactly what is included, what is not, and what happens if something unexpected turns up once the floors are up, which in a house of a certain age it sometimes does. You agree any change before we act on it, not afterwards.

The things that move the number:

  • Number of circuits, which tracks floor area and socket count more than bedroom count
  • Whether the property is occupied or empty. An empty house is quicker, and therefore cheaper
  • Construction. Solid stone and lath-and-plaster are slower to chase than modern blockwork and plasterboard
  • Floor coverings. Original boards that must come up and go back carefully take longer than chipboard
  • Whether making good and redecoration is in scope, or handled by your own decorator
  • Anything bundled in while the walls are open, such as extra sockets, new lighting or an EV charger circuit

Tell us roughly what you have when you call and we can usually say whether you are looking at a partial or a full job before anyone visits.

Full & Partial Rewires

We understand that not all house rewiring in Gloucestershire needs to have a complete overhaul. That’s why we offer both full and partial rewires that not only give you flexibility based on your property, but also for your budget. Older homes, rental properties and major refurbishments warrant a full rewire where the entire electrical system needs to be replaced to meet current regulations. Meanwhile, kitchens, extensions and upgraded consumer units benefit from a partial rewire to improve safety without the cost of a full rewire. Stroud Electrical Services are always available to offer the best advice for your situation, with many customers choosing to combine rewiring with new sockets or modern lighting solutions.

It doesn’t happen very often (these days) that customer service blows you away, does it! Well Stroud Electrical Services did!
Submitted a request to them via their website for a visit very late at night to find a text before 8am the next morning with a proposed visit same day..their communication has been outstanding! I also received an email with a quote for the approximate cost before the visit. When the Electricians arrived, they were highly professional, polite and very tidy! The issue was identified very quickly and fixed!
The communication alone sets Stroud Electrical miles apart from other companies! We won’t be using anyone else! Thank you again Paul and Team!

Very smooth and professional quote for, and then installation of, car charger at my home / office.

I was eligible to apply for a government business grant to contribute towards the cost of the installation. The DVLA side expectedly said that they would not pay the grant. Paul (the MD) agreed to not charge me the balance until the issue was sorted out one way or the other. It took about a month but the DVLA side got sorted out and the grant came through.

Overall great customer service.

Amazing service from this friendly and reliable local company. Woodchester Parish Council used Stroud Electrical Services to install a defibrillator cabinet on the exterior wall of our village hall. Paul and Chris turned up exactly on time, carried out the work promptly and efficiently and left everything clean and tidy afterwards. Thanks for a good job done !

As part of our bathroom refurbishment, we wanted to incorporate some additional lighting and also move the shaver socket to a different location. Paul from Stroud Electrical Services came out to give us a quote – a fantastic system he has lets you know exactly when he’s on his way and tracks his position so I knew exactly when he would arrive! Paul took a look around and after listening to our ideas, came up with some suggestions on how we might be able to achieve the look and style we were looking for. Paul came back with his colleague James on the agreed date while we were at first fix and only spent about an hour moving the shaver socket and adding the new wiring in place, leaving it looped and disconnected to allow us to finish the second fix and tiling. James came back on the final visit to connect up the heated/illuminated mirror and under cabinet lighting on motion sensor as well as connecting up a new shaver socket that also incorporates a toothbrush charger – making the final result really spectacular and visually stunning. Would definitely recommend to anyone in need of an honest and reliable electrician who is also able to give guidance on how best to achieve the result you want. James and Paul were polite, friendly and even our dog loved having them! 10/10 would high recommend!
Time had come to upgrade the lighting on the road so I was tasked with finding a company that could meet our specific requirements.
From the first contact with Stroud Electrical Services I have found them professional and helpful. Following a phone call a visit was arranged, where we talked over what needed to be done and Paul took some notes and photos. He informed me that he would get a plan drawn up and send us a quote, setting the expectation that it might take a little while to put this together, good to his word the plan and quote was sent. We traded questions and answers before we finally agreed exactly what was to be done. My questions were always answered quickly and politely. A date was fixed when the install could be done. The crew and Paul arrived as arranged and the work began. All the staff were professional and easy to talk to and be the end of the first day a large part of the work was complete (partly due to a second crew being seconded in due to them being unable to start on the job there where scheduled at). By lunchtime the next day the work was complete, tested and everything tidied.
Everyone is happy with the upgrade and the speed and quality of the work. I would not hesitate to recommend Stroud Electrical Services, they have professional staff, good systems in place that keep you informed and most importantly they do what they say they will do.

It is our first time to use Stroud electrical services and I am impressed.
I am very pleased for the work done by jamie and his colleague They were punctual and came round at the agreed time to change radiators in the property. The area was left neat, tidy and they cleaned when the job finished. Both guys behaved in a professional way and were respectful.
I also like the communications and text messages from your company at intervals to let me know what is going on about the appointment and the job.
Thank you very much. I will recommend your company to friends and family.
